The well-known Derwent Street venue has undergone a mini refurbishment

A popular Derby city centre pub has a new look after undergoing a mini refurbishment which has seen it renamed. The Tap Beer and Spirit House, in Derwent Street, is now known as the Derby Brewing Tap House, after the firm which owns it.

The family-run craft brewing company now has four other sites across the Midlands, but The Tap was its first pub. It opened in 2008, when founder and local brewer Trevor Harris decided to get back into the pub business and rescue what was then called the Royal Standard from demolition.

The venue was first known as The Brewery Tap before being renamed The Tap Beer and Spirit House. It relaunched under its third title yesterday, Thursday, April 28, when new signage was unveiled.

Other changes include huge brew house images adorning the walls, alongside casks and brewing equipment with the aim of getting punters as close as they can get to drinking in the close-by award-winning brew house.

The beer-focused pub will be on serving ales, one-off beers, an extensive draft and packaged craft beer range, and world beers, as well as artisan ciders, wines and spirits. The firm has appointed John Mclaughlin, a multi award-winning general manager, with over 20 years’ experience, formerly of The Dog, in Burton, amongst others, to oversee the offerings with his vast experience and contacts book.

Bosses say there will also be a new pub menu offering "fresh, homemade pub classics and artisan pizzas". Paul Harris, managing director of Derby Brewing, said: "We are delighted to bring the Tap back to its core that of a Tap House and shrine to all things beer, we can’t wait to share our hand-picked beers from across the world with you as well as some of our own one-off beer creations, in our Derby born and Derby brewed Brew House. Bringing something new for the people of Derby to enjoy."

Derby Brewing's four other existing sites are The Greyhound, in Friar Gate, The Hole In The Wall micro-pub, in Mickleover, The Pig in Lichfield, and The Middle Bell, in Barton-under-Needwood. It will also be opening a new sports bar later this spring in Friar Gate, with an opening date set to be revealed soon.
