The pilot brewing position is designed to support the Starr Hill Richmond Taproom with a consistent supply of pilot beers and execute specific R&D recipes passed down from the Brewmaster. The ideal candidate will have significant brewing experience, be capable of handling batches from start to finish unassisted, have a strong work ethic and positive attitude, be an excellent communicator, and will take pride in maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
The position will be full-time, salaried, and full benefits eligible. The position will be based out of our taproom and brewery at 3406 W. Leigh Street, Richmond VA. Starr Hill is a regional brewery with our production facility located in Crozet, Virginia. Starr Hill owns and operates 5 satellite breweries, one each in Roanoke, Richmond, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Tysons Corner.
Principle operator of the 10 bbl, 3 vessel brewing system and associated fermentation tanks, foeders and brite tanks.
Performs CIP, sanitization, and maintenance activities as required
Assist brewmaster in creating brewing schedule, procuring raw materials, and developing recipes
Manage beers in the process – daily readings, etc.
Prepare Raw Materials and manage inventory
Collect and ship samples back to Crozet lab for analysis
Responsible for upholding Starr Hill’s safety and quality expectations
Support brewing operations at Starr Hill’s Main Production Facility in Crozet, VA on rare occasions
Support Richmond Taproom with beer line cleaning, staff training on beers, and occasional engagement with customers about the beer/brewing process in partnership with the Tap Room General Manager.
Partner with existing brewing team members to execute pilot batches
· minimum of 4 years of professional brewing experience
· Strong focus on safety and quality
· Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 55 pounds
· Be able to perform all job requirements including brewing, cellaring, yeast collection and dry hopping
· Working knowledge of basic maintenance of pumps, valves, and other equipment commonly found in a craft brewery.
· Complete understanding of brewing and cellaring process
· Positive attitude
· Willingness to learn
· Physically be able to bend over, twist, kneel, climb stairs, stand all day, lift 55+ pounds, repeatedly handle hot and cold liquids
· Ability to work independently with little supervision
· Located in Richmond
· Formal brewing education
