We are looking for a passionate head brewer to lead the brewing and cellar team at our 10,000 bbl/year brewery. The head brewer’s primary responsibility is ensuring the brewing and cellar team is producing the highest quality beer possible. This is a hands-on position requiring the head brewer to participate in all aspects of the brewing, cellaring, packaging, and facilities management.

Manage day-to-day production operations with a focus on organization, cleanliness, and maintaining a positive working environment.

Provide a positive leadership example by actively mentoring, managing, and assisting all production team members while living and breathing our core values of quality, community and respect. Work with the team to set goals, deadlines, and identify priorities for their time. 

Collaborate on recipe development and formulation including taproom only, spirit-aged, and seasonal releases. Keep the creative juices flowing with one-offs, wort bends, experimental hops and foraged ingredients.

Work in partnership with the brewery’s leadership team to develop and maintain the company’s vision and culture and work closely with the leadership team to execute goals and needs of Smog City. 

Complete yearly performance reviews for all brewing staff

Assist the taproom management in developing & delivering sensory and beer education training for our taproom staff. 

Review labor data regularly to ensure your team is staffed efficiently and appropriately, including reviewing and approving time cards on a weekly basis.

Ensure production SOPs stay up to date and help the team create new ones as needed.

Create and implement effective communication channels with the production staff, including keeping them in the loop on important company updates and getting their feedback on a regular basis.

Ensure the brewing and cellar team are set up for success and daily tasks are being performed to company standards and trained SOPs.

Communicate new and changing information and follow up on execution.

Verify and track raw materials to ensure timely execution of production schedule.

Actively monitor processes in the moment to continually identify ways to simplify processes, maximize efficiency and drive innovation.

Evaluate equipment functionality and drive preventative maintenance to ensure optimal working conditions and avoid production delays.

Help plan the production schedule and schedule production staff as needed

Guarantee a safe and productive work environment.

5+ years brewing experience and experience working at a brewery is required.

2+ years of experience leading, managing, and supervising others is required.  

Degree from a brewing program or science/engineering degree preferred.

Mechanical aptitude preferred.  Must be able to troubleshoot equipment and take charge of any needed repairs to equipment or facilities.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work independently and use your time efficiently.

Excellent beer knowledge, a good sense of smell and taste with the ability to communicate what you are sensing.

Communicate clearly and concisely with respect to all personnel at all levels, in addition to customers.

Must have a drive to maintain a positive work culture that allows both business and staff to thrive

Must be in good physical condition and able to maneuver in confined spaces.

Must be able to walk, sit, stand, and/or crouch for extended periods of time.

Must be able & willing to work early morning, daytime, evening and/or weekend shifts.

Must be able to lift 55 lbs. (malt bag!) to shoulder level repeatedly and maneuver at least 165 lb. (full keg!) containers safely.
