An Iowa brewer picked up the state's lone win at this year's Great American Beer Festival in Denver over the weekend, while a duo of home brewers and a Des Moines brewery won honors in a pro-am tournament.

Clear Lake-based brewer Lake Time Brewery took home a bronze medal in the specialty brewing category for its sweet Peanut Butter Porter. Lake Time from former home brewer Bob Rolling opened in 2013.

"We always knew our Peanut Butter Porter was great now we have confirmation from world class judges at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver CO," the brewery wrote on its Instagram page.

Randy Daniels and KC McKinney, home brewers from the south side of Des Moines, teamed up with Confluence Brewing Co. in Des Moines to win a gold medal for their malty Kaltrauch recipe in the festival's pro-am competition. That competition gives homebrewers who won an award in the American Homebrewers Association/Beer Judge Certification Program competition an opportunity to submit a recipe brewed with a commercial brewery.

"Winner of the 2022 IBU Open competition, this recipe was designed by homebrewers Randy Daniels and Kc McKinney. We scaled it up, submitted it to GABF in the Pro-Am category and came back with a GOLD MEDAL," the brewery wrote on Facebook.

The pro-am competition is separate from the Great American Beer Festival competition.

The Great American Beer Festival is one of the country's most notable competitions for brewers.

More than 2,100 brewers participated in this year's event with nearly 10,000 beer entries and more than 100 types of beer. The festival, in its 40th year, returned after a two-year COVID-19-related hiatus.
