Beer news and information for Washington, the Northwest, and Beyond

Updated – Thanks to my readers, I’ve added more to the list. As I explained, it is hard to keep track of this stuff. As everyone understands, keeping track of time for the past two years has been weird. My list started at 43. The number is now 48.

ORIGINAL POST – For reasons I need not explain, the past two years dealt new and existing breweries plenty of blows. The challenges persist. Still, that didn’t stop 48 breweries from opening in Washington over the course of the past 24 months. That number doesn’t even include the existing breweries that opened additional locations. (Pictured above, Iconic Brewing in Richland, Washington. Photo from Facebook.)

Lists like this are hard to compose. What should I consider a brewery? What exactly is new? Although it is licensed as such, is a nomadic brewery really a brewery? There is some subjectivity involved, I admit. It is always a nebulous number so I intentionally use vague terms like “roughly.” (Note – a nomadic brewery/brewer is one that does not have its own, permanent brewery but produces its own beer at other breweries.)

Shout out to Paul Schowalter, an intrepid beer hound who keeps his eyes peeled for this stuff. I owe that dude a beer. No doubt I missed something or misrepresented something, so I rely on my readers to share what they know. You’re welcome to leave comments below or contact me directly.

Yoked Farmhouse and Brewery 525 SW Pine Rd SW, Port Orchard, WA 98367 Read the story I did about Yoked Farmhouse and Brewery.

The following breweries also opened in the past couple of years.

4 Stitch Brewing Company 7 192nd St SW, Bothell, WA 98012 Self-described startup nano-brewery in a residential location. Maybe you know about this brewery because you live in the neighborhood. More likely, you’ve yet to hear of 4 Stitch Brewing, which has been slowly ramping up its game over the past couple of years. Keep an eye on social media, etc., for taproom hours.

5th Line Brewing 1015 E Lincoln Ave Ste 106, Yakima, WA 98901 You are wondering about the name. It’s a hockey term. Kind of like 12th man is a football term, I suppose. The founders are actively involved with the local youth hockey program.  The brewery and taproom in downtown Yakima is not too far from Single Hill Brewing.

Audacity Brewing 1208 10th St Suite C, Snohomish, WA 98290 Now open in the former home of Lost Canoe Brewing. I suppose it does take some audacity to open in the midst of the chaos.

Beach Cat Brewing 7876 Birch Bay Dr #101, Blaine, WA 98230 Lovely taproom on the beach in Birch Bay. While the brewhouse and other equipment are getting set up, they’ve their beer at nearby breweries. Good stuff. Amazing beachside sunsets.

Breaking Waves Brewing 3388 NW BYRON ST, #100 Silverdale, Washington 98383 A new brewpub in old town Silverdale opened early in 2021. Looking at their social channels, food and live music are a big part of what’s happening at Breaking Waves.

BreakThru Brewing Look for the beer at local bottleshops around the Seattle-Tacoma area. As far as I know, to this point, BreakThru operates as a nomadic brewer, brewing its beer at other breweries.

Camas Brewing/Camas Slices 339 NE Cedar St., Camas, WA 98607 Located at the former site of Mill City Brew Werks.

Crooked Label Brewing 773, Village Way, Monroe, WA 98272 Brewery and taproom in an old boat repair shop.

Dog and Pony Brewing 5427 Binder Rd, Cashmere, WA 98815 To call it new is a bit disingenuous. If memory serves, this brewery has popped in and out of existence for the past few years. Now it is fully open with what appears to be a cool taproom space in Cashmere.

Dunagan Irish Pub and Brewery 3222 56th St, Gig Harbor, WA 98335 A move and not a new opening, really. The brewery moved from Tacoma to its new home in Gig Harbor in August 2021. But it’s a whole new deal in Gig Harbor so I am considering it new.

E2W Brewing (Olalla) Opened in July 2020, but is currently closed. Stay tuned. From what we’ve heard, the plan is to reopen.

Exit 16 Brewing A new “hometown microbrewery” in La Center, Washington. That’s all I know. No taproom, from what I can tell.

Fast Fashion This is a sort of a nomadic brewing side hustle for Masonry Pizza in Seattle, which has always exhibited an outstanding level of dedication to craft beer. Find Fast Fashion beers at the Masonry locations in Fremont and Queen Anne.

Five Dollar Ranch Brewing 1570 Beet Rd, Walla Walla, WA 99362 Brewery and taproom in a rural location on the state line, a few clicks south of Walla Walla.

Formula Brewing 1875 NW Poplar Way, Issaquah, WA 98027 Visible from Interstate 90 in Issaquah, a brewery, pizza joint, taproom, and beer garden.

Four-Eyed Guys Brewing Co. 910 W Indiana Ave, Spokane, WA 99205 A “mid-century modern themed” brewery and taproom in Spokane that opened in 2020. I have yet to try the beer, but I do love the brewery’s logo.

Funky Hop Brewing Started brewing and moving its beers about a year ago. Look for Funky Hop’s beers at bottleshops and bars around the Vancouver area. As far as I can tell, the brewery doesn’t have its own taproom.

Garland Brew Werks 603 W Garland Ave, Spokane, WA 99205 Now open in Spokane’s historic Garland District. The owners, who previously operated Community Pint in downtown Spokane (a beer-focused bar), teamed up with a brewer who earned his chops at Iron Goat Brewing. Sounds like a great recipe for a brewery and taproom.

High Steel Beer Co. 233 S 1st St, Shelton, WA 98584 Located in downtown Shelton, this brewery calls itself “a subsidiary of Smokin Mo’s.” In other words, that’s where you can drink the beer. Smokin Mo’s — “Southern fare & oysters join craft beer & cocktails in a historic brick-walled space.”

Hops and Seed Brewery 9206 200th St SE Suite C-5, Snohomish, WA 98296 “Part of the JM Cellars family. Believed & Brewed in Maltby.” This uncommon venture is a dual winery/brewery with an accompanying tasting room.

Hop Chaos Brewing Company 10115 N Newport Hwy Suite A, Spokane, WA 99218 Formerly known as Pints Alehouse, this location now serves as the taproom for Hop Chaos Brewing. Same owners. The actual brewery is a few miles away. More a transition than an opening.

Iconic Brewing 2470 Henderson Loop, Richland, WA 99354 Debbie and Matt Driscoll, longtime dairy farmers and vineyard owners, teamed up with their son Todd, a brewer and winemaker, to open this brewery and tasting room, where you can get beer as well as estate wines.

Meatheads Smokehouse and Brewery 8928 Vernon Rd, Lake Stevens, WA 98258 As the name suggests, it’s a barbecue joint and brewery. In their own words, “Smokehouse style restaurant with high quality, craft beer!”

No Drought Brewing 10604 E 16th Ave., Spokane Valley, WA 99206 Just opened.

Nun Chucks Brewing 18609 76th Avenue West Suite #C, Lynwood, WA Very new brewery in Lynwood.

Old Man Brewing 215 Cypress Ave, Snohomish, WA 98290 I admit that I haven’t dug any deeper than a glance at social media, so all I know is that Old Man Brewing is located in the “Sports and Entertainment Lounge” at Collectors Choice Restaurant. Other than the name, I see no evidence it’s a brewery. I’d love to stand corrected.

Paramour Brewing Company Its home base is at Bellwether Brewing. I have to do more research about that whole situation. Paramour Brewing started brewing and distributing its beers in late 2020.

Perfect Circle Brewing 713 6th St Prosser, WA 99350 The street address above is actually for Brewminatti, a coffee shop that hosts live music and offers beer. That seems to be where Perfect Circle Brewing sells a lot of its beer. This may require a research expedition to Prosser to gather more intel.

Saal Brewing 10209 270th St NW, Stanwood, WA Pronounced SAIL. Downtown Stanwood brewpub in a historic old firehouse. Been brewing their beer at nearby breweries, getting ready to brew on-site. Great beer, fantastic food.

Shellback Brewing They exist. Opened in early 2020. Other than that, not finding a lot of information for you.

Sig Brewing 2534 Tacoma Ave S, Tacoma, WA 98402 Located in the old brewery district of downtown Tacoma, not too far from 7 Seas Brewing, E9 Brewing, Black Fleet Brewing, and the new Camp Colvos Brewing taproom. Along with beer, Sig Brewing offers a pizza-focused food menu.

Skep Brewing Company A Community Supported Brewery (CSB) based in Tacoma. Visit the website to learn more about the membership opportunities.

Sovereign Brewing 851 Rainier Ave South, Seattle, WA 98144 Closely, if not entirely, related to Standard Brewing, this is where they make saisons and spontaneously fermented beers. Lots of barrels. You can also get mainstream beers from Standard Brewing at this location.

Talking Cedars Brewing 19770 Sargent Rd SW, Rochester, WA 98579 A destination brewery, distillery, taproom, and restaurant with beers from Talking Cedar Brewery (Chehalis Indian Tribe) and spirits from Heritage Distilling. A big, ambitious endeavor that amounts to more than the sum of its parts, it’s a project of Chehalis Tribal Enterprises that supports and serves the tribal community.

Temperate Habits Brewing 500 S 1st St, Mt Vernon, WA 98273 Katie King and Brooke Bosserman (below) are cousins and pharmacists. The two teamed up to open this brewery in downtown Mount Vernon, naming it after an adage that suggests a pharmacist should be a person of good moral character and temperate habits.

Thirsty Crab Brewing 9158 Washington 525, Clinton, WA 98236 Not exactly a new brewery, but last July Thirsty Crab announced it was opening a new, different location. In Clinton, just half a mile up the highway from the ferry dock on the south end of Whidbey Island.

Wheelie Pop Brewing 1112 NW 50th St, Seattle, WA 98107 Grand opening on December 26, 2021. Located right in the heart of the Ballard Brewery District.

It takes a village So what did I get wrong? What did I miss? Leave a comment or contact me.

You missed Sig Brewing in Tacoma. I forget exactly when they opened, but it was sometime after the March 2020 shutdown.

We need a new term for untethered brewers so we can stop throwing around an ethnic slur.

We need to ban that Fleetwood Mac song immediately

Good point Michael. I think I just found a better term. Nomadic is actually a better, more descriptive term for this type of brewery. Replacing now.

I’ve added three more to the list thanks to everyone’s input. Cheers to 46!

No Drought Brewing, in Spokane Valley, just opened the doors to their own location about 10 days ago. Previously, they were tennant brewers at Steel Barrel.

Fair Isle Brewing opened right before the pandemic last year as well

Sage Brewing, Pasco. Officially opened it’s brewery and taproom March 2020. Has fought through it all and has managed to open a second tasting room just this month.

They barely snuck onto the list. Started brewing Dec 2019, from what I see. Taproom a few months later

Soft open in Dec ’19, that falls in the 24 month span I do believe good sir. Tyson, Ben and their crew are all wonderful. Just wanted to throw it out that all the “little guys” deserve some love.

Not sure of the opening dates, but here a others which I believe qualify: Crooked Label in Monroe, SAAL in Stanwood, Nun Chucks in Lynnwood. Penn Cove opened additional locations in Oak Harbor and Freeland on Whidbey Island.

Until I can make it to Monroe myself, will need some proof of life from Crooked Label. Social channels have been silent for a long time. Still open?

Facebook has several recent posts including today, 12/24, 12/23, 12/20, 12/19, and 12/18.

Howdy Dan Haff here. Owner/Brewer at Crooked Label Brewing Company In Monroe, Washington 98272. We just celebrated our 1st anniversary last Saturday December 18th! We have had an amazing year! We are open 6 days a week. Closed on Wednesdays. We have posts on untapped and our main social media page is Facebook! We just upped our lease and look forward to an amazing 2nd year! Peace and Blessings. Always Be Kind. Always!

Nun Chuck’s Brewing opened their taproom at 18609 76th Ave W in Lynnwood on 10/15/21. They had been operating as a brewery before this.

Fermentation Initiative in Tacoma is a beer supply store who opened a brewery inside last spring.

When I went there on 12/5/21, they had temporarily stopped selling their own beer pending the completion of certain renovations. The home brewing supplies business continues.

Snow Eater Brewing Company in Liberty Lake! Opened in (I’m pretty sure) April 2020. Won a couple of medals at the Washington beer summit
